The "Sag Swag" is a baffling trend that many people don't seem to understand at all, including myself. It is hard not to notice the strange "penguin like" walk with boxers and briefs in clear view for everyone to see. This unfashionably tasteless fad is inexplicable and has many people just shaking their heads in disgust.
When people think of sagging pants they usually associate the style with teens of color or rap artists, but in all actuality people of all walks are incorporating the Sag into their Swag. Why do people sag their pants?? There are many rumors and speculations to why people sag their pants. Some people say the style originated from prison and others connect it with gang affiliation. Others just do it because they honestly think its a stylish way to rock their denim. At the end of the day, whether you agree with it or not, its a style that seems like it will not be changing anytime soon.

Lord knows I hate saggin pants and they all have the same walk, walkin like they have yeast infection....ugh pull them pants up. They should get a ticket foreal. One day was walkin on audobon str and this guy I guess he didn't wipe his behind properly and he got something stuck on his under wear and he didnt even realize was pitiful......I wish I had said something . I would have said " excuse me sir I think u got lil poop stuck on ur undies" lmao

ReplyDeleteI work at an all boys Group Home for Troubled Youth Per Diem and most of them walk around like this w/ no women around. This kid hhad on a burberry pattern shirt w/ glasses and boxers to match. Had his WHOLE ENTIRE ASS CURVE OUT WITH THE BELT UNDER IT!!! No matter how many times you try to address it they ignore you. They really do think its cool! This truly baffles me. Great topic to blog on! SMH...

ReplyDeleteI teach at a local college and I touch on Saggin pants as part of my "N" Word curriculum. I will just type a bit from that lesson:
First, spell S-A-G-G-I-N backwards and what do you get? The origin of the look is from centuries ago. It was the intent of slave owners to demoralize the field workers by forbidding them to wear a belt as they worked in the fields or at any other rigorous job. Later, men in prison wore their pants low when they were "spoken for." Prison official took belts away from prisoners to prevent suicide. In prison, young men were often molested by older and stronger inmmates. They became suicidal because of what happened to them. Eventually, saggin pants became a symbol that the young man was often someone's GIRLFRIEND!
I hope that some young people read this blog and think about the message they are sending and what they are promoting by wearing this ridiculous style. It does take a warrior to promote dignity and self-respect when the society around you is promoting low self-esteem, ignorance and disrespect. Will you stand up and be a warrior today? PULL YOUR PANTS UP!! In these times it's a revolutionary act!
