New Petition wants Bert and Ernie Gay!

New online petition urges PBS to change the Sesame Street odd couple "Bert and Ernie" into a Gay Couple! A Chicago resident by the name of Lair Scott started the online petition that has gathered well over 1600 signatures. Mr. Scott wants PBS and Sesame Street to change the nature of the relationship between the characters Bert and Ernie; making them a gay couple that eventually get married.

The petition states, this "would show children and their parents that not only is it acceptable but also teach children that homophobia is wrong, bullying is wrong and that Sesame street should recognize that there are LGBT relationships, families, and include them in their show."

The Sesame Workshop responded in a statement: "Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves."

I have always viewed Sesame Street as a show that teaches lessons of tolerance and compassion to children and adults abroad. I love Bert and Ernie's friendship and feel the characters should remain unchanged.

How about you? Do you feel the characters Bert and Ernie should come out as a Gay couple?? Share your honest thoughts

  1. They are Gay. Big Bird is Gay. Half the cast are Gay. That black guy with the bald head is Gay. The spanish lady is a Dyke. The Count is a Trick. Snufflelufagus is Gay as Hell and possibly has a crush on Big Bird. Just listen to how he addresses Bird "Oh Bird"(in his low whisper come hither voice). Oscar the Grouch is about the only thing straight residing on Sesame Street. Sad but true.

  2. I think whoever thought of this petition is probably gay. Only in America we get to see & hear the most idiotic thoughts be taken seriously. Why should sexual orientation even matter to children at such a young age, these nasty ass crackers need to go back to the caucus mountains with that barbaric ish! What next???

  3. One of the goals of an intimate relationship between two people (marriage is best) is having children. You can't have children naturally in a gay relationship because it only comes naturally via a man and a woman. In other words, teaching kids or anyone that being gay is unnatural and unacceptable. Though we should still continue to treat people with respect regardless of their views and practices. Lastly, this Bert/Ernie situation is only a symptom of a bigger issue. And that bigger issue simply disbelief in God's way (via His Books, His Messengers) and accountability for that disbelief on Judgement Day.

    One!

  5. Racist and homophobic remarks show how needed a petition like this is. If muppets shouldn't have sexual orientations or express love(or lust) in any way, then Miss Piggy shouldn't be shown to kids either. Bert and Ernie are a normal monogomous couple, OR, best friends and presumedly hetero, but Miss Piggy is a lust-crazed horndog. Seaseme Street and the Muppets have the same creators, and same audience. I always looked at Seasame Street like it was a street in the hood. It was multi-cultural/mixed, kind of broke, but with love and realness, and before any other white (or yellow/orange) people move into hoods, gay couples of all colors (already outsiders) move their first. Thats how I always saw Bert and Ernie, just the gay couple upstairs. Sesame Street was, and is, one of the few 'not upper middle class or rich white bread' shows aimed at educating children. The Broadway musical "Avenue Q" spoofed Seasame Street, but really, since the early 1970s, Seasame Street has always been an innovator, leader, and ground-breaker. And if you don't thinking have a multicultural cast in childrens television is a big deal, good! Seasame Street made viewing that normal for you as a child. Part of education is teaching kids how NOT to become shitty adults. The anonymous posters to your blog would've done well with learning a bit more from Seasame Street. It's 2011. America is changing. We will not be a white-focused nation forever, nor a hetero-focused nation. Teaching kids to be homophobic, I hope, will one day sound as insane as teaching kids to be racist, sexist, xenophobic, ageist, sizeist, etc. We will always catagorize people, but it doesn't mean we can't co-exist with them. This is where we get better adults, from better-taught children. Millions of parents have relied on Seasame Street to add to their parenting, and in many cases, BE the parent. Maybe some people just want to wallow in ignorance and continue to have other nations surpass us in human rights, but the world is passing their cartoonish asses behind. It doesn't matter what the issue is-how we treat each other is how we measure our greatness.
